Cartagena & Beyond

Unfortunately Brian & I received parting gifts from the ship that included stuffy noses, coughs and achy bodies.  We have both recovered (except for a cough I will keep all winter, most likely) & somehow managed NOT to give it to Jess in Florida - but this is the first day I have felt like writing to catch up on the blog and finish the trip.
We arrived in Cartagena, Columbia Tuesday about an hour early & our gang of six met up with our tour guide as soon as we could get off the ship.
Boys on a bench waiting to get off ship
The gang depart for tour
This was a great advantage, as we were about an hour ahead of HAL tours and didn't have to fight the crowds.  She took us to the highest point in Cartagena where there was an old monastery and the view was amazing.
B & G with Cartagena view
The gang pose in front of Cartagena
From there we drove back down the hill to the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas
& then into the old city.  We walked about 2 miles throughout the town with its colorful buildings and great balconies – it was very enjoyable and again, not crowded because we were ahead of the other tours.  The city reminded me of Cadiz, Spain because of the narrow streets and intriguing sightlines.

B does his 2 miles through Cartagena streets - just cause you beeped you can't stop walking!
We entered a museum (ugh! –lol!) but the courtyard was a tropical paradise, with trees, a cat and even a parrot.
We saw the marketplace and told our guide we wanted shopping – so we ended up at an emerald shop for our “free” drink.  Susan bought emeralds but the rest of us bailed and did a walk around the shops – more jewelry stores!  LOL!  We requested to go to a souvenir market area and she took us to an outdoor market, but there was an emerald factory next door.  She must have been getting a kickback – lol!  Anna found a few dresses in the market and I bought some Columbian coffee and we returned to the ship.  We drove along the coastline & by the beach area before arriving back to the Zuiderdam.

At the port was a small menagerie of animals including flamingos and parrots.
Also a small shop with Columbian items so I managed to do a bit of damage to my credit card…  Overall, I enjoyed Cartagena immensely & thanks to Greg for setting up a great tour – even if the lady talked on & on…lol!
Greg gets his name on the van! LOL!

Boys on a bench

More boys on a bench!
We had a sea day next.  Our last Olympic event was bean bag toss or baggo.  I played last so knew what my score had to be, but choked and could not make a holer – I ended up second place in the Olympics because Chrissy from Australia beat me by 10 points!  Brian got beat out by the youngster on the ship & ended up in fourth place overall…
Me with my 2nd place certificate, Joel and the rest of the winners.

I didn’t win at poker that day, but Susan did and I ended up a winner at blackjack so overall did ok in the casino.  B says he lost money but washed a lot of bills and has been offered another “free” cruise already on Carnival.
My trivia team, V2FL (Vancouver to Florida) was leading the pack of 28 teams by 2 points.  We knew we had to beat out the Barflies in order to win the whole shebang.  At the last trivia event we tied with 2 other teams, (neither of which was the Barflies) and had to answer a tie-breaker question.  We knew we had the cumulative trivia in the bag, but it was sweet success to guess the closest number and WIN the last trivia activity!  We won another bottle of champagne and really nice suitcases.  We all managed to pack the suitcase and I took the champagne for Jess.
Eric, Lois, Rich, Dave the Cruise Director, Erica, Greg & Me - the Winning Team!

The last formal night the gang of 6 got together one last time and enjoyed dinner together.  We had an odd thing happen at dinner:  the waiter told us only one lobster per person, but after he had taken our orders.  He was reluctant to tell us this and had no explanation…  As only 3 of us had ordered 2 lobsters & the others had ordered none, we just told him to bring us lobster for everybody!  We solved our own problem, but this was the first time we have ever been denied food…
We found out later that 2nd seating folks had as many lobsters as they wanted…strange…  That night was the Black & White Ball – a chance to meet and dance with the ship’s officers for fun and prizes.  I danced with the Event Manager and won a free drink, a cookbook (which I gave to Susan) and a day pass to the spa – which Brian enjoyed.  It was a great party & Greg, Anna, Susan & I danced most of the evening until midnight or so…  Brian & Dusty were party poopers – lol!
Greg & Anna are dancing fools

It took us awhile to go through customs in Florida and get our rental car but we were finally on the road to Winter Park about 1pm.  I slept most of the way & we arrived at our hotel about 5pm.  Jess had a class but got out early so we went to dinner at Perkins, basically a Denny’s.  Food was ok and we enjoyed catching up with Jess.  Saturday he did school work and then we joined him for a movie – The Mazerunner.  I liked it but Brian said I could not choose a movie again right away…lol!  So Jess chose the movie for the next day – The Book of Life.  The animation was well done and I have a better understanding of The Day of the Dead celebration, but Jess does not get to choose a movie either!  LOL!  That evening Brian returned to the hotel and I went with Jess to a LAN party – a viewing of League of Legends video game world cup!  It was interesting and I enjoyed meeting Jess’ friends AND I won the best door prize: a $10 Legends gift card, which I gave to Jess…  Remember, it is not the prize that matters, it is the winning that counts!!  LOL!
Monday Brian drove to Hardee county, zip tripping along the way.  He met up with about 6 Georgers for a mini-gathering lunch – it was a long day for him, but he enjoyed it.  He says he still doesn’t have a hit in Hardee!  Lol!
I went to Jess’ and we went to Wal-Mart so he could grocery shop on my dime – ha!  When we returned to his place I played Mom and did 3 loads of laundry for him (as he had not done his wash for 6 weeks) and cooked him a casserole…  I know – I’m a sucker, but when you love your kid…
Tuesday we returned to Jess’s – I did more laundry, lol! Brian and Jess made ginger snap cookies.  By this time we were both feeling better and I was hungry as I had not eaten the last couple of days.  Jess wanted to go out for Italian to a new restaurant he wanted to try – they had early bird dining until 630pm.  I had been pretty good on the ship dietwise, but when they brought a freshly made loaf of French bread to the table, I ate it and enjoyed it as did J & B.  The dinner special included soup or salad, drinks and pasta.  It was all pretty good and Jess packed up enough leftovers for 2 more meals AND he got another loaf of bread.  The very cute waitress described how to heat it but Dad suggested Jess go back in and tell her he needed better directions and could she come to his place & help him heat it…  LOL!
It was an enjoyable visit with Jess & he shouldn’t bitch too much about us invading his space: he got free meals, 2 movies, groceries, clean clothes and 4 dozen cookies out of the deal and NO flu – yeah!  We got undivided attention, hugs and kisses – I think it was a fair trade.
I have unpacked all the suitcases and put them away.  I still have my own laundry to finish up and pick up the tuxedo from the dry cleaners so it is ready for the next trip.  We have no plans YET for another cruise but a small trip to Vegas is planned for February & back to Winter Park in May for Jess’s graduation.  I hope you have enjoyed our trip virtually as much as we enjoyed it in reality.  Safe travels and long journeys, GB

From the Tree to the Bag…

Fuerte Amador
11 Oct 14

Today we are in Fuerte Amador, the port for Panama City and the Panama Canal.  We left Costa Rica 2 days ago and had a relaxing sea day (but rainy weather) in between.  I did not post a blog while we were in Costa Rica for 2 reasons:  first, I went on a tour and 2nd, we seem to have lost megabytes when I was trying to download a photo last time.  So today we are using the wifi off the ship.  It took us forever to track down a wifi that worked as the one nearest the ship was overloaded and no one was connecting.  We ended up down the harbour at a Bennigan's Restaurant - we are eating lunch as using thier wifi.
Brian with Mei - Jess? whaddya think???
Let’s backtrack a bit and see what’s happened since I last blogged.  I believe I mentioned it was Brian’s birthday so we celebrated at The Pinnacle with our friends again.  The photo shows B with our waitress Mei – Jess, she is interested in meeting you – she is 30 and is from Bali…lol!
Susan, Anna, Gretch on the left and Dusty, Greg, Brian on the right

After Huatulco, Mexico we sailed to Puerto Chiapas.  This is a great little port that has some shopping and a bar/pool right off the ship.  I purchased a few items, then spent the day at the pool.  Brian took the shuttle into town and grabbed a taxi from there and went to Sam’s Club.  He purchased cheap liquor there as well as some more candy for the crew.  Upon his return he joined me at the pool.
As far as sea days go, this ship could use a few more activity crew and a few more games.  My mornings are busy with bean bag toss or other sports, but after 1pm there is nothing to do.  I am still in the lead for Ladies Olympics, but just barely.  I missed my putts today in golf and only got points for attendance.  Brian is in the top 5, but will have to work hard to win.  However baggo is one of the activities still left and he is VERY good at that.  There is an afternoon poker tourney most sea days and I am 2 for 4.  I have had to adjust my game a bit, but think I have finally figured out how to win.  We have a great group of players, 3 of them from Australia, which means you will always have a good time when Aussies are involved.  They are traveling together as a gang of 10 and all of them went zip lining in Costa Rica yesterday.
Susan, Dusty and I went on tour to a Coffee Plantation in Costa Rica.  It was fun and very interesting to see how coffee is processed from the tree to the bag…  The part I did not like was getting up at 8am and listening to the tour guide drone on while we were traveling in a bus for 3 hours… ugh!
This is a handpainted oxcart in Saarchi, Costa Rica - they use them in parades

I am in training for new job - coffee picking!  It pays $2 a basket!

When we returned to the ship, Susan & I went back out to the market for some shopping.  We found some great bargains and ran into Brian.

This may be my last blog post from the ship as we will not have a connection while traveling thru the Panama Canal and our next port of call will be Cartagena, Columbia where we are taking a private tour with Susan, Dusty, Greg and Anna.  After that we have a sea day, a beach day and then Ft Lauderdale.  I may have to play catch up once again but from Jess’ place in Winter Park.  Have a great weekend my friends and fair sailing…

Huatulco Birthday

6 Oct 14
Today is Brian’s birthday & we are in Huatulco, Mexico.  We visited this port last year on our Peru trip.  It is a charming little village that boasts seaside dining and shopping.  We took our time in the morning and walked off the ship about 11am.  Folks were coming back to ship by then,  mostly complaining about the heat.  Gee, we thot it was lovely out, cooler than a Texas summer day-lol!, however the humidity is a bit higher.  We were exploring shops when we bumped into Susan & Dusty.  Susan & I proceeded perusing shops – we bought nothing as they would not bargain - and Dusty and Brian found benches to hold down.  We took several photos of them and may do a whole slide show, entitled “Boys on a Bench” – as I am sure they can find more benches in each port…
Prior to arriving in Huatulco we had 2 wonderful sea days.  My trivia team is kicking ass – at team trivia the other day we only missed one question and we are the leaders in Pub Trivia and Name That Tune.  In fact one lady suggested to us that we should split up so other teams had a chance to win!  LOL!  Like that would happen…  I am getting beat up in the Casino – haven’t been able to win at blackjack or poker.  Susan won a poker tourney the other day and I am in 3rd, for no money…  Brian I think, is playing even on the slots and the favorite of the casino staff as he continues to ply them with chocolates.
The sports activity on board is The HAL Olympics – they are hosting a ladies & mens event separately.  The events are at  different times so B & I rarely see each other on the ship until 5pmish to go to the hot tub.  The first activity was ring toss and neither one of us did well…  Then there was ping pong but the ship has a few “pros” aboard and again we lost.  The event that I finally scored in was golf chipping – I found out after B played that I did the best for women and men!  So now I was tied for first with 2 other ladies.  We had basketball shoot-out yesterday and I came in 2nd – that should put me in first by myself.  Brian is up in the top 5 guys -  later that afternoon and this morning there was baggo or beanbag toss (not an Olympic event yet) and Brian is the undefeated champion of baggo.  Oh and I keep forgetting to mention, I have been going to the gym & doing 60-100 sit-ups and lifting weights.  Also wearing my fitbit and have successfully walked 2 miles or more daily.  B keeps wanting to know if we've beeped yet - but if i say yes, he just wants to sit down right then - except we usually have to get back to the ship - lol!

Although today is B’s Natal Day we will celebrate it tomorrow night with the gang and enjoy a marvelous meal in The Pinnacle Grill once again.  Tomorrow is another port day as we will be in Puerto Chiapas, Mexico.  So I will check in again with ya’ll from there…  Buenos Dias

Really – Cabo San Lucas!

Friday 2 Oct
We were very surprised that we were still scheduled to port in Cabo.  We have heard that none of the tours were affected by the hurricane damage but we will be the first ship to dock in Cabo since then as all the others continued down to Manzillo or Puerta Vallerta.  It is a rainy day here in Cabo and I have elected to stay on the ship as I do not like tenders (the small boat that takes you to shore)  They had difficulty with the tenders this morning because of the wind and the waves but finally got everybody off after 2 hours…  B went ashore to check out the lay of the land so I may post an additional report after talking with him later.  However from the ship we can see the hotels and beaches.  NO ONE is there – most of the hotels and condos have no glass in the windows.  Supposedly the boardwalk is 80% improved but we will see…
We have been enjoying the ship so far…  HAL has cut back on staffing tho and they only have 2 cruise staff – the Cruise Director and the Activity guy – Joel.  He is from New Zealand and works very hard.  He does all the sports, pub quizzes, disco and any other duties as assigned…  They have divided the sporting events into Men’s & Women’s Olympics.  The first event was ring too – which I suck at and B did not score.  But the next event was golf chipping and I scored the highest of all the contenders – men or women.  So I am currently tied with the lady who won the ring toss.  Bean bag toss on Saturday will determine the leaderboard!  Go me!  Brian said if he did not win at Baggo he was gonna turn the ship around…LOL!
My trivia team is pretty terrific – my friend from Australia, Greg is on it and a guy from Georgia, 2 REALLY smart Asians and a Canadian lady from Nova Scotia.  We are in the running from the Team Trivia and are kicking ass at Pub Trivia in the evenings.  Also we are doing well at Name That Tune.  Unfortunately for me 2 of the activities are just before and right after dinner – so I have to rush to join our table and I have to leave early…  But trivia is fun for me so…
Brian is holding his own in the casino and has curried favor with all the casino crew by bringing chocolates most evenings.  We have finally found a small group of poker players, so have been playing a bit on the Poker table that is a machine.  I haven’t won a tourney yet but am doing ok at the cash games.
We had a marvelous meal 2 nights ago with Greg, Anna, Susan and Dusty at the Pinnacle Grill.  I had giant tiger shrimp cocktail, Caesar’s salad (which they made at the table) and an amazing fillet.  Others had halibut, lamb chops and fish medley.  Desserts were also terrific – fresh berries, volcano cakes, soufflés & crem brule’.  Our waitress was Mei from Bali and Jess, she is thirty and interested – Dad showed her your photo and she thinks you are very handsome… lol!  Brian’s birthday is the 6th and we will celebrate it at The Pinnacle Grill with the same gang and we have requested Mei for our waitress again…  This is the restaurant that costs a bit extra but we think is very worth it.

Well the weather is still gray and dreary but I am typing this by the back pool and the Jacuzzis are calling…  Have a great weekend Vaya Con Dios Y’all

Cruising the Pacific Coast

30 Sept 14
We have had smooth sailing since leaving Vancouver Saturday afternoon.  On Sunday around noon, we arrived in Astoria, OR a charming fishing villiage that used to be the home of Bumble Bee tuna.  We were met by friends from Where’s George and she took us to the downtown area.  Astoria is only a small village nestled in the cliffs – some of the houses are mini-painted ladies that give the whole town a quaintness.  Being Sunday we stumbled upon Market Days and we explored the handicrafts & local fruits and brews available in the area.  I purchased a great piece of art that is painted on steel – the subject looks somewhat like Iota…

We then went to lunch with Nerdy and her mom and enjoyed a terrific seafood meal.  They all had fish and chips and I ate a bowl of steamed clams – yum!  All in all we had a terrific day in Astoria and I would visit there again…
Yesterday we had a sea day and just relaxed, enjoying the ship’s activities.  Brian played in the ping pong tourney but said that most of the competition were professionals that even brought their own paddles & balls.  The casino crew are excited to see him daily as he brings them chocolates as a bit of “bribery” –he is getting a reputation throughout HAL at The CandyMan – lol!
I have been playing trivia of course but we have been coming in second place by being 1 off – last night’s pub quiz we finally won!  And the funny thing is that there is NO prize, they just congratulate you for winning…  HAL is getting cheap!  Lol!  We had supper with our Aussie friends, Anna & Greg and enjoyed a leisurely dinner – the tuna steak was awesome…

Today we are in San Francisco and will go explore the city in a bit.  Have a great day as we go “out and about”…

Greetings from Vancouver

We traveled by train from Seattle to Vancouver last Thursday.  We are staying at the YWCA Hotel right next to the stadium in downtown Vancouver. It is a very nice hotel and the location is terrific.  Two blocks from the Skyline subway and a Costco!  Lol!  B has managed to buy his candy supplies for the casino crew and a few other goodies.  Friday was our day to explore Vancouver but we did it in the rain!  Rode the skyway around to several shopping malls and out to Granbury Island - a fun market place with shops, fruits and artisans.  Boy the rasberries were as big as strawberries, but cost $7/pound!  They sure looked yummy tho.  Met up with a poker buddy, April, who took us to this great seafood restaurant where we thoroughly enjoyed a great lunch.  As there is a casino in Vancouver, we naturally ended up there for the evening.  I am down and bit but B won playing slots and is up - 55 cents!
We are off to board the ship today and will post a blog from San Francisco.  Bon Voyage, Ya'll!!
B uses free wifi on Amtrack to check out Wheres George?

G and her friend Moose Mountie

Cruising - The Prequel 2014

Greetings -
Brian & I are once again headed out on the high seas.  We are taking the circuitous route to visit Jess - flying to Vancouver to eventually arrive in Florida!  LOL!

As you can see, we will cruise through the Panama Canal which will be a new adventure for us.  The only other new port is Cartagena, Columbia. The rest of the cruise will be similar to last year BUT we will be traveling with friends so should have a good time.  I hope you will join us here and I will try to post a blog entry at each port of call.
